Driving Experience
Almost 2 years experience of which most of the first year was spent learning solid basics on the skidpad. Focusing more on circuit driving this year and entered JDC 86 class late last year and will be competing this year also. I'll also be taking on Meihan C in the 180SX.
Advice For New Drivers
Spend time learning the basics - it's amazing what you can learn with 2 simple cones and understanding how versatile basic training can is heavily over-estimated. I've seen quite a few examples of people hitting the track too quickly without these basics and being left without a car for months.
For example, with the 4 cone slalom learn how to get tighter and tighter whilst maintaining a drift, this requires strong acceleration and braking to complete successfully - imagine throwing the car at each cone then braking to make it around the cone. Not only does this look cooler, it teaches how to correctly brake which translate to the circuit driving.
Drive your car stock for a while! It will make you a better driver overall if you get to experience different setups (torzen diff, no angle kit, stock suspension). The only mod I would recommend out the gate is a good bucket seat. Once you're ready to think about upgrades, LSD + Coilovers, then after this angle kit. Other mods are just extra and can be added over time.
Regarding the car, the stock steering rack is very weak, even with stock angle, I would recommend getting some knuckle stoppers installed. I bent a rack already and it's not cheap!
EXPERIMENT! As I was learning I tried at least 15 different types of tires (front and back) along with different pressures, tested in all conditions. Just because I love the SAILUN ZSRs, doesn't mean they'll suit your style. If there's one thing veterans at Meihan have taught me is that is there no "one size fits all", you have to find what works for you. So have fun with it, change stuff up often and find what works for you. Small changes can make a difference between a hard to drive car and a car that drives itself.
Study your driving - take videos both in and out of the car. What feels good in car can look average outside the car, especially if you're considering competing.
"Have fun along the way" - Shirtstuckedin (KC) quote, this is meant to be fun, we are a niche group. Help each other out, gatekeeping is lame, and just have fun. Meihan is the most intimidating track on the planet, but the people are utterly amazing and, 2 years in, it's no longer about drifting as much, but also about the people.
I'm still new, but happy if you wanna ask Qs @gaz_86_180sx
